The Common Core standards focus on ELA and Math. In June 2010, the Michigan State Board of Education approved the Common Core standards. They did this rather quickly, within days of their public release, to be able to apply for the federal Race to the Top funding.
Later, another national group developed the science standards called Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and released them in 2013.
The social studies standards were completed by a third group and also released in 2013. These national social studies standards are called College, Career and Civic Life or C3.
Our conversations with members of the State Board of Education seem to indicate there will probably not be any official adoption of the C3 standards in our state and the social studies GLCEs will not be thrown out and will still be used here in Michigan.

Since there are many overlaps between the Common
Core ELA standards and social studies, we have included examples
we have been developing. One is from
Meet Michigan
for the 3rd grade and one from
Our Michigan Adventure
for the 4th grade. These samples have
new questions to connect them to the ELA standards and to the
basic concepts for social studies.
